This is the downloads page for the VE text editor. Here you can download the current build of VE (4.4a8) and a selection of older historical builds.
Available here are VE builds for MS-DOS (including v4.4, the current release), Linux and Mac OS X.
A DOS build of the very first version of VE, VE 1.03b, is available here for historical interest. This is a direct Qunix->DOS port of the original 1984 release of VE. Relative to VE 4.4, it is very limited functionally, but it does support a good set of basic text editing functions and is still remarkably useful and robust. Think of it as VE (very) Lite.
On this page you can also independently download the latest VE documentation (v4.4 only) and the latest VE tips file (also only v4.4 only). The tips file and full documentation are also bundled into the VE 4.4 release file, but the versions available on this page may contain updates not found in the release file versions.

DOS VE requires an x86 CPU (8088 or above) and CGA, EGA or VGA graphics. The additional 32-bit builds available with VE 3.x and VE 4.x require a 386 or better CPU and VGA graphics.
To unpack Zip files, use command "unzip (or "pkunzip -d" if available) filename.zip"

Linux VE v3.5g, 2005 (with Documentation)

Linux VE is 32-bit, requires an x86 CPU and requires that ncurses be configured in the distribution.

Mac OS X VE requires a G4 or G5 processor and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.5 (Leopard).
