VE is a lean, fast and feature rich text editor. Think vi power, but smaller, faster and friendlier to use. VE started life in Toronto Canada in 1984 as a text editor for the NABU 1600 business computer. It was developed as an alternative to the inoperative vi installation that was provided with the machine. The name "VE" was in fact a good natured poke at the "vi" name. VE has been evolving ever since, and version 4.4a, featured here, remains true to VE's core design principles of lean size, snappy execution and feature richness. Since 1984, VE has been through four major releases and several minor releases, targeted to DOS, Linux and Mac OS X Terminal users. The current release, v4.4 (2023), is targeted to the DOS PC enthusiast community, and features MDA, Hercules, CGA and EGA support (added to the prior VGA support), PC and PC XT support (via an 8088-specific build), smaller executable size, faster file operations and one key bug fix. The 16-bit DOS builds of VE require an x86 CPU (8086/8088 or better) and MDA, Hercules, CGA, EGA or VGA graphics. DOS VE 3.x and 4.x also include a 32-bit build along with the 16-bit builds. The 32-bit build requires a 386 or better CPU and VGA graphics). The Linux versions of VE are for x86 and require the ncurses package to be configured (typically included by default). The Mac OS X versions of VE are for PPC and require Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.5 (Leopard). VE is brought to you by Inverary Solution's CampbellWare. There a lot of text editors out there. Why VE? Simply stated, VE delivers vi-class power but in a smaller executable that is both faster and friendlier to use. VE's slimline 126 KB executable packs a powerful punch. Here are some of VE's key features:

• Defaults to being in text insertion mode. No more unintended catastrophes when an Insert command isn't issued before typing!
• The most frequently used commands are mapped to keyboard F1-F12 keys.
• Two levels of built in help: (a) full command summary available at all times via Alt-h and (b) extensive set of on-demand tips available at all times via Alt-t.

• Strong multi file support. VE can edit up to 256 files simultaneously, and supports a rich set of features for multi-file editing (cross file copy/paste, interactive full screen file selection, file by file statistics and more).
• Strong large file and long line support. VE can edit files over 256,000 lines long (32 bit executable) and up to 384 characters wide.
• Both 16-bit and 32-bit executables. The 16-bit executables have a smaller memory footprint; the 32-bit executable can edit larger files, more files, or both.


• Editing operations on characters, words, lines, portions of lines, paragraphs, line blocks and rectangles.
• On-the-fly and after the fact text formatting/wrapping.
• Search/Replace with regexp-style start-of-line and end-of-line matching.
• Ten numbered tags that can be set anywhere in the file being edited.
• Left and right screen scrolling for seamless long line support.
• On-the-fly and permanent macros.
• Per file change tracking and visual Unsaved Changes Indicator
• Universal undo.
• Filename auto-completion (Open File, Goto File dialogs).


• Shell to DOS command line interpreter
• Extensive and interactive configurability, including screen and cursor colors.
• Support for MDA and Hercules (80x25), CGA (80x25), EGA (80x25, 80x43) and VGA (80x25, 80x43, 80x50)
• Support for PC, PC XT, PC AT and all later PC models and clones
• Mouse support for cursor placement, word selection, rectangle selection and "point and shoot" file selection.
